The short answer
Record whether one short press produces one action, two actions or no response. Close the game before changing input paths. First compare with external remapping software closed, then compare the game’s Steam Input setting if needed.

- One brief press produces two menu moves — Record the active devices and remapping software.
- An external remapper is running — Compare with that app closed before changing drivers.
- Input stops when the remapper closes — Check compatibility and compare the required path separately.
STEP 1: Record one press and the visible devices
- In the same game menu, make one brief press and release. Record one move, two moves or no response. Do not confuse this with the menu repeatedly moving while you hold a button.
- Close the game. Press Win+R, enter joy.cpl and inspect the controller names. A physical device and a virtual Xbox-style device can coexist; compare which entry disappears when the remapping app closes instead of judging by the name alone.
- If device-hiding software is already configured, both entries may not be visible. Use the existing tool’s connection/output information to compare before and after. Do not delete devices or disable drivers to force a particular list.
Result and next action: Keep the short-press result and device list. They guide the comparison but do not establish that the game reads two controllers.
Results that did not fix the problem help the next reader too.
STEP 2: Test with external remapping software closed
- Close the game and exit DS4Windows or another remapper normally. Check the system tray or Task Manager to confirm the app has stopped; do not remove its installed drivers.
- Check the physical controller and button response in Steam Settings → Controller. Record this game’s Properties → Controller setting, compare Enable Steam Input and launch through Steam.
- Repeat the same short press. If two actions become one, the external path may contribute. If two remain, investigate other devices or game bindings. If input disappears, the external path may be needed for this game/controller combination.
Result and next action: Keep the working single-path configuration if the comparison resolves it. Otherwise continue with the recorded result, restoring an unhelpful change first.
Results that did not fix the problem help the next reader too.
STEP 3: Compare the remaining path and game bindings
- If input still doubles with the external tool closed, close the game and compare Disable Steam Input, then restart and repeat. If the game does not support the physical controller and input stops, restore the previous setting.
- If an external remapper is required, close the game and test that tool with the game’s Steam Input disabled. Do not change both paths during the same comparison. For an existing HidHide setup, follow its documentation; do not guess which devices to hide or install it as a universal fix.
- If only one game is affected, check its layout and duplicate keyboard/gamepad bindings. If multiple games are affected, compare other connected controllers, virtual devices and remappers that start automatically. Keep one change and one repeatable test at a time.
Result and next action: Record the device, game, short-press result and active input path. An unresolved case needs those details, not repeated driver deletion or an assumed hardware diagnosis.
Results that did not fix the problem help the next reader too.
Protect saves and keep changes reversible
- Do not delete a device because joy.cpl lists two names.
- Hiding devices is not the first comparison. Preserve a working keyboard/mouse and existing configurations.
FAQ
Does an Xbox name mean I connected a second physical controller?
No. Remapping software can create a virtual Xbox-style device. Compare the list with the software running and closed to understand the entry.
Are two joy.cpl entries proof of double input?
No. A game may read only one of them. Compare its actual response to one short press before and after changing an input path.
The controller stops working when I close the remapper. What now?
The game may need translated input. Restore the known configuration, check its controller support and compare the external tool separately with Steam Input disabled. No response is a distinct result from duplicate response.
Do I need to install HidHide?
Not automatically. If closing an overlapping remapper gives a working single input, another tool is unnecessary for that comparison. Existing hiding configurations require their own documentation and should not be changed by guesswork.
The menu repeats only when I hold a button. Is that double input?
It may be normal repeat behavior. Use a brief press and release in the same menu to compare one action with two; record held-button behavior separately.
