Discord Notifications Missing: DM, Mention and Windows Checks

For Windows 11/10 desktop Discord when DMs, server mentions or desktop banners seem missing. Record message receipt, unread badges, sounds and pop-ups separately.

The short answer

First open the conversation to check whether the message arrived. For one DM inspect mute, Ignore and message requests; for server posts inspect notification levels and overrides. Compare viewing that conversation, another conversation and minimized Discord before checking Do Not Disturb, Streamer Mode and Windows banners.

Fixes, in order

Step 1|For one DM, inspect conversation mute and Ignore

Server notification controls do not directly fix a muted private conversation.

Time: Compare one change at a time

  1. Open the affected conversation from the DM list and check whether the new message actually arrived.
  2. Right-click that conversation and inspect Mute Notifications. Group DMs have their own setting; change only the conversation you intend to hear from.
  3. For one person, inspect their profile or the ignored-accounts area under Content & Social. Remove Ignore only if you want messages from that person; do not unblock unwanted contacts as a general repair.
  4. If other sounds work but this DM is silent, distinguish conversation mute from the separate message-sound settings under Notifications.
  5. Move to another conversation before asking the same person to send another short DM. Do not judge solely from a test while viewing the affected conversation.

Windows-wide notification permission does not undo Discord’s conversation mute or Ignore setting.

Step 2|For a new sender, inspect Message Requests

Messages from people outside your friends list can be routed away from the normal DM list.

Time: Compare one change at a time

  1. Open Home and inspect Message Requests near the DM area. The tab may appear only when requests are pending.
  2. Inspect Spam within Message Requests too. Verify the sender before deciding whether to accept or reply.
  3. If no request exists and the sender could not send, inspect Messaging Permissions in User Settings and privacy settings for the shared server. Layouts may place related controls under Content & Social.
  4. If the message already appears in a conversation, continue to Step 1 or Step 4 instead of changing request settings.

A request badge differs from a Windows pop-up. You do not need to weaken privacy or accept an unfamiliar sender just to test notifications.

Step 3|For server posts, compare notification types

Server level, channel/category overrides and mention suppression are separate controls.

Time: Compare one change at a time

  1. Right-click the server → Notification Settings. Inspect server mute and its notification level; Only @mentions will not notify for every ordinary post.
  2. Inspect Notification Overrides for the affected channel and category. Distinguish mentions-only behavior from Nothing or a muted channel.
  3. For missing role or @everyone/@here notifications, inspect their separate suppression settings. Do not infer their behavior from an ordinary post or personal mention.
  4. In an appropriate channel, ask a willing participant to send an ordinary message and a real mention addressed to you. Compare the two after your change; avoid sending mass mentions for testing.

Discord documents an @everyone exception to server mute. Do not assume every notification type is suppressed identically.

Step 4|Compare viewing state and Discord status

An open app is not enough to identify the reason a banner is absent.

Time: Compare one change at a time

  1. With Online status selected, compare a willing person’s incoming DM while viewing that DM and while viewing another conversation/server. Record pop-ups and unread indicators separately.
  2. Minimize Discord without quitting it, including when it moves to the notification area. Ask for another DM from the same person and compare.
  3. If notifications also fail in another conversation or while minimized, inspect your avatar’s status menu. Do Not Disturb mutes desktop notifications.
  4. If OBS or another streaming app is running, inspect User Settings → Streamer Mode and Disable Notifications. Stop any public stream before temporarily changing this setting, record its original value and restore it after comparison.
  5. If only the currently viewed conversation lacks a pop-up, record that condition. Do not treat it as proof that the entire app or Windows needs reinstalling.

This is a Windows desktop comparison. A documented mobile foreground-notification rule is not evidence that the PC client must behave identically.

Results that did not fix the problem help the next reader too.

Step 5|For all banners or game-only failures, inspect Windows

Keep desktop banners, notification sounds and unread badges as separate observations.

Time: Compare one change at a time

  1. Open Discord User Settings → Notifications and inspect desktop notifications. If only audio is missing, inspect the message-sound setting separately.
  2. On Windows 11, open Settings → System → Notifications. Inspect the global setting and, if Discord appears among app senders, its notification permission and banner option.
  3. Inspect Windows 11 Do not disturb and its automatic conditions. Compare a full-screen game with the normal desktop. On Windows 10, inspect Focus assist and its corresponding automatic rules.
  4. Open notification center with Windows+N on Windows 11, or action center with Windows+A on Windows 10. A notification stored there without a banner points toward display conditions.
  5. Keep Discord running for the comparison. If sounds and unread indicators are absent too, revisit Discord settings; if only the banner is absent, prioritize Windows display conditions.

App registration and distribution can affect whether Discord appears in Windows’ per-app list. If absent, inspect Discord’s own settings and status first.

Avoid

  • Do not change every server or weaken DM privacy for a single missing notification.
  • Do not test by repeatedly sending messages or mass mentions; coordinate short tests with a willing person.

Important cautions

  • Record the message type, actual conversation receipt, unread/sound/banner results, viewing state, status and original settings. Restore temporary changes.
  • For screenshots sent to support, hide DM contents and personal account details. In-game overlay messages and Windows desktop banners are different surfaces.

FAQ

Should I change server settings when only a DM is silent?

First check that DM’s mute and whether you ignored the sender. For an unfamiliar sender whose message is absent, inspect Message Requests and Spam.

Does server mute always suppress @everyone?

Discord documents an exception. Inspect @everyone/@here suppression, role suppression and channel mute separately.

Why do notifications disappear only while Discord is open?

Compare viewing the same DM, another conversation and minimized Discord. If all fail, inspect status and Streamer Mode; if unread/sound work but banners do not, inspect Windows.

Why is there a badge but no message in the DM list?

A pending Message Request can produce a badge outside the normal DM list. Inspect Home → Message Requests and verify the sender before accepting.
