The short answer

The reviewed minimum requires a hardware-ray-tracing GPU, SSD and DirectX 12. GTX 10/16-series cards and HDD installations do not meet that baseline. Then inspect Windows and drivers; beta-era workarounds are historical guidance to compare with current release notes.

Step 1|Check hardware-ray-tracing capability

Configuration edits cannot add missing hardware capability. Capability alone also does not meet every performance requirement.

Time: About 2 minutes · Risk: low

  1. Open Task Manager → Performance → GPU and record the exact model.
  2. RTX 20-series onward and RX 6000-series onward have hardware ray tracing; GTX 10/16 and RX 5000-and-earlier do not meet this requirement.
  3. Compare the reviewed minimum models RTX 2060/5050 and RX 6600/9060 as well as the rest of the specification.

Results that did not fix the problem help the next reader too.

Step 2|Use an SSD installation

The original official guidance says HDDs are unsupported and can cause loading, asset, stutter and crash problems.

Time: About 20 minutes, depending on data size · Risk: low

  1. In Steam, use the game’s Properties → Installed Files → Move install folder if offered, selecting an SSD. Use Steam’s supported storage move workflow rather than manually dragging installation files.
  2. Allow at least the reviewed 115 GB requirement plus update headroom.

Results that did not fix the problem help the next reader too.

Step 3|Check Windows and official GPU drivers

The reviewed Windows 10 minimum is 22H2 build 19045.7291. The beta warned that old NVIDIA drivers could prevent launch.

Time: About 20 minutes · Risk: low

  1. Run winver. On Windows 10, compare version 22H2 and build 19045.7291 or later; use applicable Windows Update guidance if older. This game specification is not a recommendation to run an unsupported OS.
  2. Use NVIDIA App, AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition or Intel’s official site for an appropriate driver. Historical beta versions were NVIDIA 610.74+, AMD 26.7.1 and Intel 101.8864; check current game/vendor notes instead of downgrading to them.
  3. Restart the PC after updates.
  4. Steam Library → right-click the game → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files.

Results that did not fix the problem help the next reader too.

Step 4|Compare recording and overlay conflicts

Beta notes described crashes with old OBS and Comodo falsely blocking the executable. Those reports do not prove every later detection is a false positive.

Time: About 10 minutes · Risk: low

  1. If using OBS, update appropriately; the historical guidance required version 29.0.0 or later.
  2. Keep Comodo and other protection enabled. Record any detection name and file and consult the vendor or game support before exclusions or restoring quarantined files.
  3. Temporarily compare Discord/Steam overlays and FPS tools off one at a time, then restore settings that do not affect the result.

Results that did not fix the problem help the next reader too.

Step 5|Inspect Resizable BAR on Intel Arc

Beta notes described large losses with ReBAR disabled on Arc A580/B580 and shader rebuilding at each Arc launch. Check current notes before treating that as current behavior.

Time: About 15 minutes · Risk: medium

  1. Before any firmware change, have backups, the encryption recovery key and the exact PC/motherboard instructions. If supported and advised by the maker, use its procedure for Re-Size BAR Support and Above 4G Decoding; do not guess labels or alter unrelated boot settings.
  2. Save according to the manufacturer’s instructions, restart and compare the same scene. Retain the previous settings and recovery plan.

Firmware layouts differ. Stop if support, the recovery key or the correct procedure is unclear; managed PCs belong with their administrator.

Step 6|Check service status and the exact online error

The beta described mismatched Xbox/Store accounts and changed the drone-snub requirement to UDP 3074. Check current guidance before any network change.

Time: About 10 minutes · Risk: low

  1. Start with status.gearsofwar.com for an outage or maintenance notice.
  2. On Xbox on PC/Game Pass, confirm Xbox and Microsoft Store use the same intended Microsoft account.
  3. For drone-snub, consult current official guidance and the router/provider documentation about UDP 3074. Inspect blocking first; do not broadly open ports or disable the firewall.
  4. If unresolved, record the exact error and time and contact official Gears support.

Results that did not fix the problem help the next reader too.

Avoid

  • Do not try unofficial tools or configuration edits to bypass missing ray-tracing hardware.
  • Do not disable protection or allowlist a file solely to make the game launch.
  • Do not open broad router port ranges; check the specific applicable requirement.

Important cautions

  • Driver recommendations and several known issues are from the open beta. Compare current release guidance before applying them.

FAQ

Do GTX 1660 or GTX 1080 meet the minimum?

No. They do not meet the reviewed hardware-ray-tracing requirement. A software setting cannot add the missing capability.

Does the PC version support ultrawide and uncapped frame rates?

The original Steam review lists 21:9/32:9 for gameplay and menus and uncapped rates on suitable hardware. The beta had a temporary 150-FPS cap and disabled frame generation, with removal planned for retail; a historical plan is not a fresh test of the installed build.

What was the PC Game Pass release schedule?

The October 1 announcement listed general availability for Game Pass Ultimate/PC Game Pass on October 7 at 00:00 JST. Earlier access from October 2 required Premium Edition or the relevant Game Pass premium upgrade. Check the current catalog and account entitlement before purchasing.
