The short answer
Back up saves first. Unsubscribe from Workshop mods and preserve identifiable manual mods or loaders outside the installation. Verify the base files, then compare launch results without restoring mods. A successful verification does not prove that manually added files are gone, and a mod-dependent world may still fail to load.

Step 1|Preserve the Steam saves before changing mods
A world with mod-dependent items may no longer load when a mod is removed.
Time: About 3 minutes · Risk: low
- Close Palworld, wait for Steam Cloud to finish and exit Steam from the system tray.
- Press Windows+R and open %LOCALAPPDATA%\Pal\Saved\SaveGames.
- Copy all of SaveGames outside the game and Steam installations. Check that the copy contains the world folders and files.
- Give the outer backup directory a dated name such as Palworld_before_mod_changes, and do not overwrite the original saves during troubleshooting.

Step 2|Check in-game mod settings and Workshop subscriptions
Mod Management is an in-game menu, not a Steam settings panel.
Time: About 3–10 minutes · Risk: medium
- If the title screen opens, use Options → Mod Management to disable active mods. Skip this if the game cannot launch.
- Open Palworld’s Steam Community Hub → Workshop and find your subscribed items; wording varies with Steam’s language.
- Unsubscribe from the Palworld mods on their item pages and leave them unsubscribed throughout the comparison.
- Exit Steam and inspect remaining installation files next. Unsubscribing alone does not prove that manual mods or loaders are absent.

Step 3|Preserve identifiable manual mods and loader remnants
Work from the actual client installation and retain the original relative paths.
Time: About 5–15 minutes · Risk: medium
- Use Steam Library → Palworld → Manage → Browse local files. This opens the client installation; do not work in PalServer.
- Check Pal\Content\Paks for manually installed .pak files, LogicMods or mod folders you created. Move only identified additions to a separate location outside the game.
- Check Pal\Binaries\Win64 for manually installed UE4SS or DLL loaders. Compare their names with the original installation instructions and download records before moving them.
- For Workshop-extracted files, check Mods\NativeMods\UE4SS, Mods\ManagedMods and Pal\Content\Paks\~WorkshopMods or LogicMods. Preserve identified remaining mod files outside the installation with their relative paths recorded.
- Separate manual PAKs, UE4SS and Workshop remnants in the holding directory. If you cannot identify additions safely, use the whole-folder comparison in step 5.
Do not guess which PAKs or DLLs are base-game files from names alone. If a mod manager installed them, consult its installation history too.
Results that did not fix the problem help the next reader too.
Step 4|Verify the base files and launch without mods
Keep held mods out of the installation while Steam restores any missing managed files.
Time: About 5 minutes or longer · Risk: low
- Open Steam Library → Palworld Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for verification and downloads to finish; record reacquired files or remaining errors.
- Restart Steam and launch without resubscribing or returning the held mods.
- Record whether the title screen opens and whether the failure is limited to loading an existing world.
Results that did not fix the problem help the next reader too.
Step 5|Choose the next check from both results
Reacquired files alone do not prove which component caused the failure.
Time: About 2 minutes; folder transfers take longer · Risk: medium
- If the game works after reacquisition, both missing base files and held mods remain candidates. Use step 7 to compare mods individually.
- If verification reports no problem but launch still fails, revisit the Paks, Win64 and Mods directories; verification does not establish that all additions are absent.
- If additions cannot be identified, close the game and Steam. With enough free space, move Pal\Binaries\Win64, Pal\Content\Paks and Mods as whole folders outside the game, recording their original paths. Repeat step 4 to reacquire the managed files.
- If the title still fails after that comparison, record the error, Reliability Monitor evidence and GPU driver state, then use the related general launch guide instead of attributing everything to mods.
Paks includes large base-game files. Holding whole folders needs substantial storage and downloads; start with additions you can identify.

Step 6|Compare a temporary new world only after backing up
Separate an existing-world problem from a wider failure.
Time: About 5 minutes · Risk: medium
- Confirm the independent SaveGames backup exists and contains the expected files.
- Without reinstalling mods, create a temporary new world and check whether it loads.
- If only the new world works, preserve the existing save unchanged and check the old mods’ compatibility and the save guide.
- If the new world also fails, record the error and timing and use the general crash guide; do not conclude the original save alone is responsible.

Step 7|After recovery, compare compatible mods one at a time
Use compatibility information from each distributor for your installed version.
Time: About 5 minutes or more per mod · Risk: medium
- Confirm that the title and target world work without mods, then preserve another save backup.
- Subscribe to or reinstall one needed mod whose distributor confirms compatibility with your installed 1.0-series version.
- Test startup and world loading before adding another. If failure returns, remove the most recent addition and compare again.
- Do not restore an older UE4SS build or the entire held directory in one operation.
Results that did not fix the problem help the next reader too.
Avoid
- Do not load and save a mod-dependent world without preserving it first.
- Do not delete SaveGames data as if it were a mod.
- Do not interpret successful verification as proof that additional mod files have disappeared.
Important cautions
- The game installation and SaveGames are separate. Keep the independent save backup throughout the comparison.
- After holding whole base-game folders, the game needs Steam to reacquire them. Check storage space and download capacity first.
FAQ
Where is Mod Management in Steam?
It is in the game’s title-screen Options. If the game will not start, begin with Workshop subscriptions and then inspect remaining installation files.
Does successful verification mean no mods remain?
No. It primarily checks Steam-managed files. Manual PAKs, UE4SS and external DLL loaders can remain; compare installation history with the relevant directories.
Why does a new world load while my old world crashes?
Mod-dependent data or a problem specific to the existing world is a candidate. Keep the original and backup intact, and check the previous mods’ compatibility rather than replacing progress with the new world.
