The Blood of Dawnwalker Stuttering: Fullscreen, Shaders and Frame Generation

For uneven frame pacing in windowed/borderless mode, pauses on entering an area or FPS dropping when a controller is connected.

The short answer

The developer’s historical known-issues note recommends comparing fullscreen for windowed/borderless stuttering. Install available updates, then change one setting and repeat the same route. Distinguish shader work, controller-related FPS drops and frame generation rather than treating every pause as the same failure.

Fixes, in order

Step 1|Record the current display and repeated scene

Keep a baseline for comparison.

Time: About 3 minutes · Risk: low

  1. Capture display mode, resolution and frame-rate limit.
  2. Repeat a route and record where stutters occur.

Results that did not fix the problem help the next reader too.

Step 2|Compare fullscreen only

This is the developer’s documented workaround.

Time: About 1 minute · Risk: low

  1. Change only display mode to fullscreen and apply.
  2. Keep resolution and quality unchanged and repeat the same location.

Results that did not fix the problem help the next reader too.

Step 3|Repeat the same route for the same duration

Compare the number and timing of hitches.

Time: About 5 minutes · Risk: low

  1. Travel the same route for the same length of time and compare interruptions.
  2. If it does not help, restore the previous display mode.

Results that did not fix the problem help the next reader too.

Step 4|Apply available game and driver updates

Hotfix 1.0.5 changed the shader pipeline and may help some users; it is not a universal fix.

Time: About 5–15 minutes · Risk: low

  1. Use Steam or GOG Galaxy to apply available updates; the original review used 1.0.5 as its baseline.
  2. If connecting a controller causes Steam FPS drops, note that 1.0.4 addressed outdated GameInput and compare after updating.
  3. Check the current official GPU driver, restart after any update and repeat the same route.

Results that did not fix the problem help the next reader too.

Step 5|Compare frame generation off and a sustainable FPS cap

The original community reference labels frame generation experimental.

Time: About 3 minutes · Risk: low

  1. Disable available DLSS/FSR frame generation and compare the same scene.
  2. Separately compare a cap slightly below the frame rate the PC normally sustains.
  3. Restore a setting if it produces no improvement.

The historical 1.0.4 notes include a PC VSync fix when using FSR frame generation.

Results that did not fix the problem help the next reader too.

Avoid

  • Do not change display mode and graphics quality together.
  • Do not assume a cutscene’s documented 30 FPS limit is the same as gameplay stuttering.

Important cautions

  • Check later developer notes; historical workarounds can change with updates.

FAQ

Why are only cutscenes less smooth?

The existing PCGamingWiki-based review records a 30 FPS movie limit. Compare this separately from gameplay hitches.

Fullscreen makes switching apps inconvenient. Must I keep it?

It is a comparison and historical workaround. After available updates, retest borderless and choose the mode that works for your PC.

Will another update definitely fix it?

No guarantee follows from the notes. Version 1.0.2 listed the issue as under investigation, while 1.0.5 described shader improvements that could help some users. Check later announcements.
