The short answer
Start with file verification. For white-screen failures, inspect Windows and GPU compatibility; for logo-stage failures, compare overlays and background tools. After mods, test an unmodified installation. Symptom timing guides the next comparison but does not prove the cause.

Find your symptom
Start with your symptom. Skip steps that do not apply to your setup.
| What you see | What to check | Go to |
|---|---|---|
| White screen with a cursor, then exit | Check Windows/GPU compatibility and updates; the screen alone is not a diagnosis. | Step 2 |
| Crash at the publisher logo | Compare overlays and tools that alter the running process. | Step 3 |
| Inappropriate activity detected | Check the installation rather than bypassing anti-cheat. | Step 1 |
| Failure began after adding mods | Compare without added files and check version compatibility. | Step 4 |
| Failure began after display settings changed | Preserve and regenerate the graphics configuration. | Step 5 |

Step 1|Verify the installed game files
Steam checks the installation and replaces missing or changed official files. Preserve saves and your mod file list first.
Time: Allow time for the file check · Risk: low
- In Steam Library, right-click ELDEN RING and open Properties.
- Choose Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files.
- After completion, restart the PC and repeat the same launch or operation.
Verification can restore files replaced by mods, but it is not a general remover for extra mod files. Record their paths and follow their removal instructions.

Step 2|Check Windows and the GPU driver
Older Windows or incompatible drivers can matter for a DirectX 12 game. Check your actual installed versions.
Time: Allow time for updates and restart · Risk: medium
- Press Windows + R, run winver and record the Windows version.
- Open Settings → Windows Update, inspect applicable updates and complete the requested restart after saving work.
- Use NVIDIA, AMD or Intel’s official driver source, or the PC manufacturer’s model-specific driver for a laptop. Record the old version and compare one update at a time.
The Japanese reference describes historical Windows 10 version-related white-screen reports. An old version threshold is not a recommendation to install an obsolete Windows release or a guarantee that every white screen has that cause.

Step 3|Compare without overlays and process-management tools
Record each setting so an unhelpful comparison can be reversed.
Time: A few minutes · Risk: low
- In Steam Settings → In Game, temporarily disable the Steam Overlay and test.
- If you configured CPU affinity in a tool such as Process Lasso, record and remove that custom rule for the comparison.
- Exit your recording, FPS-overlay or screen-capture tools one at a time and repeat the launch.

Step 4|Move known mod files out of the installation
Preserve added files rather than deleting unidentified game files.
Time: Several minutes · Risk: medium
- Record the names and locations of files added by each mod and preserve your saves.
- Following the mod’s removal instructions, move its added files outside the game folder; do not guess which DLLs belong to Windows or the game.
- Repeat the file check in Step 1 and launch without restoring mods. Verification does not necessarily remove extra files.

Step 5|Regenerate GraphicsConfig.xml after preserving it
Test a fresh graphics configuration without discarding the original.
Time: A few minutes · Risk: medium
- With the game closed, open %APPDATA%\EldenRing using Windows + R.
- Move GraphicsConfig.xml to a separate backup location; leave the numbered save folders alone.
- Launch and inspect whether a new configuration is created and the symptom changes. If unhelpful, close the game and restore the original file, preserving any comparison copy separately.

Avoid
- Do not rename or delete anti-cheat launch files as a workaround; a bypassed anti-cheat setup is not suitable for online play.
- Do not apply several fixes simultaneously; repeat the same launch after each.
- Do not start by disabling security software.
Important cautions
- Back up saves before changing files, using the save-location guide.
- Updates can change symptoms; compare the current official guidance and record versions.
FAQ
Play immediately turns back into Play. What first?
Verify files, then compare overlays and background tools separately. If mods are installed, test the unmodified game before adding anything else.
How can I compare my PC with the requirements?
Run dxdiag with Windows + R to inspect the OS, memory and GPU. Compare the complete Steam requirements, including DirectX support; a GPU name alone is not enough.
Does the store list Windows 11?
Yes. Its recommended OS field lists Windows 10/11. That listing does not establish that every driver or PC configuration will work.
