Monster Hunter Wilds Save Location, Backup and Restore on Steam

For Windows Steam players protecting progress before mods or migration, checking rolled-back saves or transferring Prologue Demo progress.

The short answer

The existing Steam guide locates saves at <Steam installation>\userdata\<account number>\2246340\remote\win64_save. Close the game and Steam and copy the entire win64_save folder to separate storage. Identify the account and original path first; this is separate from the game installation and its config.ini.

Step 1|Locate the correct account’s save folder

Steam userdata is separate from the game’s installation folder.

Time: A few minutes · Risk: low

  1. Exit the game normally and exit Steam.
  2. Open C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata with Windows + R, or userdata inside your actual Steam installation if it is elsewhere.
  3. Open the account-number folder → 2246340 → remote → win64_save and compare modification times with your last session.

Neither a 2246340 folder nor its timestamp alone identifies the right account. Record the full path and account. If uncertain, preserve each candidate separately and do not guess a restore target.

Step 2|Copy the entire win64_save folder

Preserve companion files together.

Time: Several minutes, depending on storage · Risk: low

  1. Right-click win64_save and choose Copy.
  2. Create a dated parent folder on a separate drive, USB device or independent cloud destination, for example MHWilds_save_2026-10-18.
  3. Paste win64_save without renaming it. Compare copied files/counts/sizes and confirm any upload completed before relying on it.

Results that did not fix the problem help the next reader too.

Step 3|Preserve config.ini separately

Keep a configuration copy identifiable as settings rather than a character save.

Time: About a minute · Risk: low

  1. Use Steam Library → right-click the game → Manage → Browse local files to locate its installation.
  2. With the game closed, copy config.ini to the backup destination under a clearly identified configuration folder.

Results that did not fix the problem help the next reader too.

Step 4|Restore a verified copy for the same account

Pause this game’s Cloud sync during the local replacement.

Time: Several minutes plus verification · Risk: medium

  1. Open Steam game Properties → General, record the existing Steam Cloud setting and temporarily turn it off.
  2. Exit the game and Steam. Confirm the recorded original path and same account. Preserve the current win64_save separately; stop if identity is uncertain.
  3. Copy the backed-up win64_save to its original location, launch and inspect the intended character and progress.
  4. After verifying the result, restore Cloud synchronization and inspect any conflict before proceeding.

If Cloud offers different versions, retain available copies and do not choose by timestamp alone. Restoring a backup can overwrite newer progress.

Results that did not fix the problem help the next reader too.

Avoid

  • Do not copy or replace saves while the game or Steam is writing them.
  • Do not delete current progress before preserving it separately.
  • Do not replace local files during Cloud synchronization.

Important cautions

  • Preserve a separate copy before any save-data operation.

FAQ

Can Prologue Demo progress transfer to the full game?

The current store confirms transfer and says it is unavailable if full-version save data already exists. The original guide references its introduction in version 1.042.00.00. Do not delete existing full-game progress just to make a transfer prompt appear.

Is Steam Cloud sufficient as my backup?

It synchronizes state and may propagate unwanted progress or corruption. Keep independent dated copies before mods or major changes.

Does resetting config.ini remove the save?

The configuration and save use separate locations. Move only the identified configuration file, preserving it and your saves first; do not delete userdata.
