Monster Hunter Wilds HDR: Washed-Out Colors, Darkness and Flicker

For unavailable HDR controls, pale or dark colors, flicker or a missing picture when HDR is enabled in the Steam version.

The short answer

Select and enable the intended HDR display in Windows before restarting the game. Compare brightness and Windows 11 calibration separately. For unstable output, Capcom identifies display frequency, V-Sync and HDR output settings; also inspect the monitor and cable’s supported signal.

Key facts

HDR capability
The store lists HDR support; the PC, display and connection must also support the intended mode.
Unstable output
Compare GRAPHICS display frequency, V-Sync and HDR output one at a time.
Windows entry point
Settings → System → Display → selected display → HDR.
Connection
Check the actual ports and cable for the intended resolution, refresh rate and HDR signal.

Step 1|Check the HDR display and connection

Select the gaming display explicitly when several screens are connected.

Time: A few minutes · Risk: low

  1. Use the monitor’s manual to inspect and enable the appropriate HDR input mode, if it requires one.
  2. In Windows Settings → System → Display, select the monitor used for the game.
  3. If the desktop is duplicated across displays, record that mode and compare Extend these displays. Restore it if the comparison is unhelpful.

Results that did not fix the problem help the next reader too.

Step 2|Set Windows HDR before testing the game

Keep Windows-side changes separate from game-side adjustments.

Time: A few minutes · Risk: low

  1. With the game closed, inspect Settings → System → Display → HDR and enable HDR for the intended display where supported.
  2. If the game was open during that change, exit it before judging the result.
  3. Launch again and inspect the in-game HDR output setting.

Results that did not fix the problem help the next reader too.

Step 3|Separate desktop brightness from the game’s HDR picture

Record whether only SDR desktop content looks wrong or the game does too.

Time: Several minutes · Risk: low

  1. In Windows HDR settings, adjust the available SDR/HDR content brightness balance gradually for the selected display.
  2. Record the monitor’s dynamic-contrast or post-processing mode, temporarily compare without it and restore if unhelpful.
  3. Restart the game and compare the same scene under the same room lighting.

Results that did not fix the problem help the next reader too.

Step 4|Calibrate a supported Windows 11 setup

The Microsoft app is not a Windows 10 procedure.

Time: Several minutes · Risk: low

  1. On Windows 11 with a compatible HDR display and HDR enabled, obtain Windows HDR Calibration from Microsoft Store. On Windows 10, skip the app and use supported display/game controls.
  2. Run it on the intended display, follow the dark/bright/saturation patterns and save the resulting profile.
  3. Restart the game and compare its brightness settings again, without changing everything at once.

Results that did not fix the problem help the next reader too.

Step 5|For flicker or no picture, inspect signal settings and cabling

Use the known-working display mode before attempting another comparison.

Time: Several minutes · Risk: low

  1. If the menus are visible, record and compare GRAPHICS display frequency, V-Sync and HDR output separately. If the picture is lost, return to a known-working mode rather than changing unseen controls.
  2. Check the monitor’s manual for HDR-capable inputs and required input settings.
  3. Check the cable’s supported resolution/refresh/HDR combination and condition. Give support the model, specification and length if the problem persists.

Results that did not fix the problem help the next reader too.

Avoid

  • Do not change Windows and in-game HDR settings simultaneously and lose the comparison.
  • Do not judge a Windows HDR change without restarting the game.

Important cautions

  • HDR appearance depends on the display. Use its manufacturer’s instructions and retain original settings.

FAQ

Does the PC version support HDR?

The Steam listing includes HDR. That does not establish that every connected monitor, cable or Windows display mode supports it.

Why does HDR look washed out?

Brightness balance, display processing and calibration can contribute. Compare the Windows desktop and game separately, then use the brightness and calibration steps.

What if HDR produces no picture?

Restore a known-working signal first. Capcom points to display frequency, V-Sync, HDR output and monitor settings, and asks for cable specifications in support reports. Do not try to adjust invisible menus blindly.
