Monster Hunter Wilds Ultrawide: 3440×1440 Bars and Aspect Ratio

For a 3440×1440 or other ultrawide panel showing narrow side bars, stretched shapes or lower performance, and for checking expectations on 32:9.

The short answer

The existing game reference describes gameplay and movies expanding horizontally up to 21:9, with narrow bars on resolutions such as 3440×1440 that are slightly wider than exact 21:9. It does not describe full-width 32:9 support. Compare actual resolution and shape before treating every bar as a fault.

Key facts

Reference support range
Up to 21:9; do not assume full-width 32:9 rendering.
3440×1440 arithmetic
At a 1440-pixel height, exact 21:9 is 3360 pixels wide, leaving a small width difference.
32:9 display
Expect a narrower rendered area under the documented support limit.
Stretched picture
Compare the monitor and selected game resolution/aspect ratio.

Step 1|Set the intended display’s native Windows resolution

Make the Windows-side choice before starting the game.

Time: A few minutes · Risk: low

  1. Open Windows Settings → System → Display and select the ultrawide monitor.
  2. Record the existing choice and select its recommended/native resolution.
  3. Inspect Advanced display and the active refresh rate for that same monitor.

Results that did not fix the problem help the next reader too.

Step 2|Compare the matching game resolution

A mismatched aspect ratio can stretch a borderless picture.

Time: A few minutes · Risk: low

  1. Open the game’s display-mode and resolution options.
  2. Select the monitor’s matching resolution, such as 3440×1440, and apply it.
  3. Inspect gameplay rather than only menus: compare round shapes and interface edges for distortion.

The original reference describes borderless fullscreen instead of exclusive fullscreen. Record the available mode and restore an unhelpful change.

Results that did not fix the problem help the next reader too.

Step 3|Distinguish narrow bars from a mismatched mode

A panel’s marketing aspect label may not equal its exact pixel ratio.

Time: A few minutes · Risk: low

  1. Compare the width of the bars in both gameplay and a movie.
  2. If only narrow side bars remain with correct shapes at the matching resolution, compare that with the documented exact-21:9 behavior.
  3. For unexpectedly large bars, record settings, compare resolution scale at 100%, then select a supported 16:9 mode and return to the intended wide mode. Restore previous values if the comparison is unhelpful.

Results that did not fix the problem help the next reader too.

Step 4|Compare UI placement and rendering load

A wider image changes both viewing distance across the HUD and workload.

Time: Several minutes · Risk: low

  1. Inspect available HUD placement options and adjust for comfortable visibility, retaining the original values.
  2. If FPS fell, compare one lower upscaler-quality setting rather than changing all graphics options.
  3. Use the same scene to judge performance, controls and image quality before keeping the change.

Results that did not fix the problem help the next reader too.

Avoid

  • Do not keep a mismatched borderless aspect ratio if it visibly stretches the picture.
  • Do not assume a 32:9 panel implies supported full-width 32:9 rendering.

Important cautions

  • Record display settings before making comparisons.

FAQ

Why can 3440×1440 have small side bars?

The original reference describes an exact-21:9 rendered area. 3440÷1440 is slightly wider than 21÷9, so those are not identical ratios. Inspect the actual image and distinguish narrow bars from major stretching.

Can I play on a 32:9 monitor?

The existing reference’s support limit is 21:9. A wider monitor can show a narrower supported image; do not assume the whole panel will be filled without distortion.

Do movies also expand horizontally?

The existing reference describes horizontal expansion for gameplay and movies within the supported wide ratio. Compare the actual scene in your version; changing window mode alone does not establish support for a wider ratio.
