Monster Hunter Wilds Low FPS, Stuttering and Frame Generation

For sustained low FPS, intermittent stutter, choosing a cap or a greyed-out frame-generation option in the Steam version.

The short answer

Steam’s recommended 1080p/60 FPS target uses Medium settings and frame generation. If performance is unstable, compare Medium or Low first. For unavailable frame generation, Capcom points to hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling and a compatible driver. Judge control response and image quality as well as the displayed FPS.

Key facts

Recommended target
RTX 2060 Super / RX 6600: Medium, 1080p, 60 FPS with frame generation.
Minimum target
GTX 1660 / RX 5500 XT: Lowest, 30 FPS, 720p upscaled to 1080p.
Separate caps
The existing reference lists gameplay 30–360, movies 30–60 and background 15–60 FPS; inspect the installed version’s controls.
Unavailable frame generation
Check hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling and driver compatibility, rather than assuming a grey toggle identifies one cause.

Step 1|Compare monitor refresh and a sustainable FPS cap

A cap is a comparison choice, not a promise the PC can reach that rate.

Time: A few minutes · Risk: low

  1. Open Windows Settings → System → Display → Advanced display and record the active refresh rate.
  2. Record the game’s cap, then compare a supported value at or slightly below the refresh rate, or lower if the PC cannot sustain it.
  3. Use the same scene for several minutes and compare frame pacing and controls, not just a peak counter value.

Results that did not fix the problem help the next reader too.

Step 2|Compare Medium or Low graphics

Capcom recommends lower presets when settings contribute to unstable performance.

Time: Several minutes · Risk: low

  1. Record the existing options with screenshots.
  2. In Options → GRAPHICS, change Graphics Preset to Medium or Low and compare the same scene.
  3. If improved, raise one option at a time. Below 16 GB VRAM, disable the High Resolution Texture Pack in Steam Properties → DLC; merely lowering texture quality may not remove its effect.

Step 3|Check prerequisites and compare frame generation

A higher generated frame count does not mean input is sampled at that same higher rate.

Time: Several minutes plus restart · Risk: low

  1. In Windows Settings → System → Display → Graphics, inspect hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling. If available and off, record the setting, enable it and restart. If absent, check hardware/driver support rather than forcing a registry change.
  2. If still unavailable, compare the GPU and installed driver with the publisher’s current guidance and the vendor’s supported package.
  3. Compare frame generation on/off in the same scene, checking response delay, artifacts and displayed FPS.

The original reference dates DLSS Multi Frame Generation support to version 1.020.00.00. That historical addition does not mean every GPU supports the option.

Step 4|Compare supported game and driver versions

The original guide cites a performance fix in version 1.042.00.02; it is a historical release note, not a statement of the latest version.

Time: Allow time for updates · Risk: low

  1. Record the game version, then inspect and complete applicable Steam updates.
  2. Record the GPU and driver version and consult Capcom’s current driver notice. The Japanese guide’s October 4 review noted issues on some Radeon models with 25.10.2 and later; do not convert an old minimum version into a guarantee that all newer drivers are stable. Check vendor compatibility and restoration instructions before changing one.
  3. After any required restart, repeat the same scene and record the result before another change.

Results that did not fix the problem help the next reader too.

Step 5|Compare power delivery and ventilation

Separate a low-power setup from performance that degrades during a session.

Time: Several minutes · Risk: low

  1. Connect a laptop’s specified charger. If the manufacturer offers a High performance power mode, record the old mode and compare; do not assume every PC exposes the same option.
  2. Keep ventilation paths clear and leave space around the PC, following its manufacturer’s placement guidance.
  3. Compare a lower FPS cap and record whether sustained performance and heat behavior improve. Stop for unusual heat, smell or other danger signs.

Results that did not fix the problem help the next reader too.

Avoid

  • Do not change every graphics option at once; compare the same scene after one change.
  • Do not retain the High Resolution Texture Pack below its stated 16 GB VRAM requirement.

Important cautions

  • Record original settings so unhelpful comparisons can be reversed.

FAQ

Why is 60 FPS not stable on the recommended hardware?

The listed target assumes Medium at 1080p with frame generation. Workload, other components and background activity still vary; it is not a guarantee for every scene or for frame generation off.

Why are movies capped lower than gameplay?

The original reference describes a separate movie cap, with a 30–60 FPS range. Inspect the movie setting separately from the gameplay cap in your version.

Why can controls feel slow with frame generation?

Generated display frames do not create a matching increase in input-processing rate. Compare it disabled with lower graphics settings if response matters more than the displayed counter.
