For missing recent progress after quitting, or locating and backing up Windows saves.

The short answer

EA warns that the latest progress may not finish saving if you quit while not controlling Hawks. Wait a few seconds after regaining control of Hawks or after a mission begins, then quit normally. This helps prevent future loss; it does not reconstruct progress already lost.

Step 1|Regain control of Hawks and wait before quitting

Use EA’s documented exit timing.

Time: About 1 minute · Risk: low

  1. Return to controlling Hawks and wait a few seconds before quitting.
  2. Record the mission and progress point before exit.

Results that did not fix the problem help the next reader too.

Step 2|Wait after a mission begins

Do not quit immediately on mission entry.

Time: About 1 minute · Risk: low

  1. Wait a few seconds after the mission begins.
  2. If a saving indicator is present, wait until it clears and exit through the game menu.
  3. Avoid forcing the game closed through Task Manager.

Results that did not fix the problem help the next reader too.

Step 3|Restart and compare the saved progress

Check against your recorded mission and location.

Time: About 3 minutes · Risk: low

  1. Use the same account and launcher to start and continue the game.
  2. Compare the mission and progress point with your note.
  3. Treat this as a check, not a procedure that restores already lost progress.

Results that did not fix the problem help the next reader too.

Step 4|Make an independent save backup

Copy the complete SaveGames folder to a separate destination.

Time: About 2 minutes · Risk: low

  1. Close both game and launcher.
  2. Press Windows+R and open %LOCALAPPDATA%\SWZeroCompany\Saved\SaveGames.
  3. Copy the entire SaveGames folder to another drive or separate storage location, inside a dated backup folder.

Steam Cloud synchronizes the current state. Keep a separate dated copy rather than relying on synchronization as a recoverable history.

Results that did not fix the problem help the next reader too.

Avoid

  • Do not force-quit at mission entry or while Hawks is not under your control.
  • Do not copy or overwrite saves while the game is running.
  • Do not delete the current save before restoring anything; preserve a separate copy first.

Important cautions

  • Copy the existing files elsewhere before manipulating saves.

FAQ

Can these steps restore progress already lost?

No. Exit timing helps prevent another loss. A valid earlier backup may provide a recovery option, but restoration is not guaranteed; preserve current files and consult EA support if uncertain.

Where are the Windows save files?

The original PCGamingWiki review lists .sav files under %LOCALAPPDATA%\SWZeroCompany\Saved\SaveGames. Enter that path in Windows+R to open the folder.

Does the store’s save-anytime description mean I can quit immediately?

The original Steam-store review records save-anytime support. That does not override EA’s warning to wait after regaining control of Hawks or starting a mission before exiting.
